This description highlights the core of the connection. Kozen Judo, with its heavy emphasis on ne-waza (ground fighting), provided the fundamental technical "groundwork" that the Gracie family adapted and revolutionized into the global phenomenon of BJJ. It credits the origin while acknowledging the transformative evolution.

It balances the individual's achievement ("Your Victory") with the supportive community ("Our Mat") that makes it possible, which is a key aspect of a good dojo culture.

Building Stronger Bodies, Sharper Minds. At Judokaa Martial Arts, we equip kids with the physical and mental strength to face life's challenges with confidence and resilience. We don't just make them stronger fighters; we make them stronger people.

STEP-01
The Beginner level Kodokan Judo class runs on Mondays to Thursday’s between 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Judokaa’s Junior Judo Class is a slower paced class with lots of breakfalls, rolls, and some Judo action. This will give your child a chance to practice both their stand up and ground work skills. Many of the classes combine a Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style and many of the children in this class will move on to fight in tournaments in both styles. Children in this program are not required to compete! Children in this class move slowly through the rank and learn many of the techniques in the early stages of the program.

STEP-02
The Advanced level Kodokan Judo class runs on Mondays to Thursday’s between 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Judokaa’s Advanced Junior Competitive Class is an advanced technical aspect of both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills, with students practicing and learning more advanced techniques. The pace of this class is much faster with the emphasis on advanced technical skills and lots of fighting. Many of the classes combine a Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style, and all the children in this class fight in tournaments in both styles. Children in this program are pushed to compete at both regional as well as provincial levels, and we have at this time many that are competing, and winning at these levels.

STEP-03
The Adult level Kodokan Judo class runs on Tuesday’s & Thursday’s between 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM. Judokaa’s Adult Judo & Jiu-Jitsu Class usually has between 5-8 brown belts and black belts on the mats at any given time, and you’re always guaranteed lots of one on one time with a higher belt. Many of our black belts have coached and competed at the national level and would love to share their Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills. The adult program also has many recreational Judokaa’s that train in martial arts to stay fit.

Kozen Judo allows us to teach the best movements from both styles with a safe environment for the kids in the program. FreeStyle Judo was introduced when the BJJ here in Ontario started to change the rules to allow very young children movements that could result in injuries to the fighters. Judokaa made a choice to error on the side of safety with the kids.

The Advanced level Kozen Judo class runs on Monday’s and Wednesday’s between 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM. This advanced level to Free Style Judo/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches the kids the advance level skills and teaches the languages used in this unique martial art. Children are taught the basic skills needed to train safely in this martial art. Students require previous martial arts training to benefit from this advance level program. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was formed from the martial art Judo some time ago so it was a very easy transition into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Judokaa Martial Arts in 2010. Judokaa started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after a few of the fighters were wanting to expand their fighting skills into this complementary martial art. Free Style Judo allows us to teach the best movements from both styles with a safe environment for the kids in the program. Free Style Judo was introduced when the BJJ here in Ontario started to change the rules to allow very young children movements that could result in injuries to the fighters. Judokaa made a choice to error on the side of safety with the kids. Judokaa started entering and winning right from the very start. We call it the “Judokaa Difference” and while other BJJ clubs try to bring their judo skills up to our level all we had to do was teach old school judo. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was a great safe martial art for kids but only if the coaches and instructors assure it stays that way. Here in Ontario there are many NON SANTIONED clubs and events which puts children at risk. Judokaa will have no part of that and will only attend sanctioned safe events. Our head instructor has made teaching safe martial arts our top priority and while we have lost a few students to the non sanctioned environment we would rather have it that way than seeing even one student put at risk.

One of the principles of judo is that a stronger opponent can be defeated by turning his strength against himself. Professor Kano explains how in yielding there is strength: “Suppose we estimate the strength of a man in units of one. Let us say that the strength of this man is 10 units, whereas my strength, less than his, is 7 units. Then if he pushes me with all his force, I shall certainly be pushed back or thrown down, even if I use all my strength against him. This would happen from opposing strength to strength. But if instead of opposing him, I leave him unresisted, withdrawing my body just as much as he pushes, at the same time keeping my balance, he will naturally lean forward and lose his balance. In this new position, he may become weak (not in actual physical strength, but because of his awkward position) as to reduce his strength for the moment, say to 3 units only instead of 10 units. But meanwhile I, by keeping my balance, retain my full strength, as originally represented by 7 units. Here then, I am momentarily in a superior position, and I can defeat my opponent by using only half of my strength, or 3 1/2 units against his 3 units. This leaves one-half of my strength available for any other purpose. If I had greater strength than my opponent, I could, of course, push him back. But even if I wished to and had the power to do so, it would still be better for me first to give way, because by so doing, I should have greatly saved my energy and exhausted my opponent’s.” Benefits of Judo Great exercise and stress relief Excellent weight control without dieting Amazing self-defense built right into a sport Opportunity to compete in a safe environment

As part of that, we have made an effort to address the bullying behavior that continues to be prevalent in modern society. Although extremely important, we believe that it is not enough to just teach our students how to defend themselves against bullying. We want to teach them how damaging bullying can be, so that they will be less inclined to bully others as well. We also want to arm them with effective strategies that they can use to come to the aid of others being bullied. We are proud to be a part of the “Martial Artists against Bullying” (MAAB) movement. This is an international organization made up of professional martial arts instructors from all over the world. The MAAB has put together a comprehensive anti-bullying program called “Done with Bullying.”
